Beijing: In the pulses category, China’s import of moong increased slightly, while pea imports declined in the first two months of 2025.
As per Customs Department data, moong imports rose to 52,618 tonnes during January–February 2025, up from 48,519 tonnes in the same period last year.
Imports in February, however, fell to 19,231 tonnes from 33,387 tonnes in January. Major suppliers include Myanmar, Ethiopia, Uzbekistan, and Australia.
In contrast, pea imports fell to 2,23,149 tonnes in the same period, down from 2,92,430 tonnes a year earlier.
Although February saw a rise to 1,34,384 tonnes (up from January’s 88,765 tonnes), trade tensions are expected to impact future shipments.
China recently imposed a 100% customs duty on Canadian peas in response to Canada's import tax hike on Chinese goods. Similar retaliatory tariffs now threaten imports from the United States.
As a result, Russia may emerge as the primary pea supplier to China, filling the gap left by Canada and potentially the U.S.
