Cold Weather in Plains, Strong Winds Causing Damage
★ In some parts of North India, especially Haryana, recent unseasonal rain and hailstorms have damaged standing crops. However, the return of cooler temperatures in the past few days could benefit wheat crops, provided the weather remains favorable in the coming weeks.
★ According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), strong winds (25-45 km/h) are expected in northwest India. Light to moderate rainfall or snowfall may occur in Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, and Himachal Pradesh between March 9-11.
★ Scientists believe that if the average daily temperature remains around 15-16°C, it would be ideal for wheat crops.
★ Experts and representatives from the flour milling industry at the Roller Flour Millers Federation of India in Goa predict that wheat production could reach approximately 110 million tons in the 2025-26 marketing season, up from 106 million tons this year.
★ The arrival of the new crop in mandis (agricultural markets) is above the Minimum Support Price (MSP). However, increased arrivals in recent days have led to slight price moderation.
★ According to I-Grain India, as arrivals increase, prices may decline, but they are unlikely to fall below the MSP. If prices remain above MSP, it could again impact government procurement.
