In December 2024, the Directorate of Sugar and Vegetable Oil, under the Union Ministry of Food, Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution, has allocated a free sale quota of 22 lakh tonnes of sugar for millers across various states. This allocation is the same as November 2024 but 2 lakh tonnes lower than the 24 lakh tonnes set for December 2023.

The quota distribution is as follows:

  • Maharashtra: 8.04 lakh tonnes
  • Uttar Pradesh: 6.09 lakh tonnes
  • Karnataka: 3.12 lakh tonnes
  • Tamil Nadu: 1.36 lakh tonnes
  • Gujarat: 68,000 tonnes
  • Bihar: 53,000 tonnes
  • Andhra Pradesh: 27,000 tonnes
  • Chhattisgarh: 4,000 tonnes
  • Haryana: 56,000 tonnes
  • Madhya Pradesh: 47,000 tonnes
  • Punjab: 33,000 tonnes
  • Uttarakhand: 40,000 tonnes
  • Telangana: 2,592 tonnes
  • Rajasthan: 685 tonnes
  • Odisha: 407 tonnes

This quota, effective from December 1 to 31, 2024, will require mills to sell their assigned amount of sugar. Industry analysts believe this allocation is balanced, meaning there are unlikely to be major fluctuations in sugar prices during December. However, moderate price changes are expected, especially since industrial demand may be weak due to cold weather and the end of the festive season.
