The demand for black pepper in northern India is expected to rise after the conclusion of the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj.
During the event, trading activity in northern consumption centers had slowed, leading to a decrease in stock levels.
However, with the event now over, traders anticipate a pickup in demand for this key spice. In Kerala, the arrival of new pepper consignments has already begun, indicating the start of increased trading activity.
Recently, pepper prices in Kochi's terminal market dropped by Rs 7 per kg, with garbled pepper priced at Rs 672 per kg and ungarbled at Rs 652 per kg.
This price drop is attributed to limited trading activity in the region. The market has stabilized after the completion of the first phase of pepper plucking and preparation in Kerala’s major producing centers.
Due to the early harvesting in regions like Idukki and Pathanamthitta, aimed at catering to the Sabarimala pilgrimage, the first phase of plucking is already finished, resulting in a reduced influx of fresh stock to the terminal market.
During the Sabarimala pilgrimage, producers in Kerala secured attractive prices for their pepper, with one kg and half kg packs reaching Rs 650.
Now, traders in northern India, particularly in the Disawari centers, are showing renewed interest in buying pepper. This trend is expected to continue, especially with the upcoming demand during Ramzan
