The diversion of shipping lanes away from the Red Sea due to instability, including threats from Houthi rebels, has led to more ships passing through Colombo.

This increased traffic, combined with ongoing custom clearance efforts, continues to overwhelm the port's capacity.

The situation is further exacerbated by the variety of goods stacked in the port, including essential items like rice, sugar, and pulses, making it a crucial logistical point for the region's food supply chain.

Despite 24-hour operations to clear containers, the port remains burdened with more containers arriving than leaving, preventing the situation from improving quickly.

The authorities are working tirelessly to address the congestion, but with a persistent inflow of goods, the problem remains difficult to resolve in the short term.
