New Delhi. Domestic urea production is expected to rise by 11 percent from the 1.8 million tonnes recorded in March, reaching nearly 2 million tonnes in April. While LNG supplies were impacted due to the crisis in the West, their availability has now improved. Typically, the average urea production in April stands at approximately 2.18 million tonnes.
During the current month, around 600,000 tonnes of urea are also expected to be imported from abroad, bringing the total availability to approximately 2.6 million tonnes. Domestic production is likely to witness a further increase in May.
The sowing of Kharif crops commences in June, at which point the domestic demand for urea reaches its peak. Comprehensive efforts are being undertaken to meet this demand. Stocks of this critical chemical fertilizer are being transported to major agricultural states to ensure that farmers receive it in a timely manner.
India typically produces an average of 2–2.5 million tonnes of urea per month; however, in March 2026, production declined by approximately 27 percent, falling to 1.8 million tonnes. Manufacturing units had faced a shortage of adequate gas supplies.
Gas supplies began to increase starting April 6, and plants are now receiving enough gas to meet 90 percent of their requirements. Consequently, urea production has begun to show signs of recovery.
