Doubt over achieving sugar export target

India’s sugar mills are likely to export only 7.75 lakh tonnes this season against the 1 million tonne quota.
Key reasons for lower exports:
Cheaper sugar supplies from Brazil have pulled global prices down.
Indian sugar prices are currently above global levels.
Mills are selling more sugar in the domestic market due to festive demand.
So far, contracts have been signed for 7.50 lakh tonnes, with about 7.20 lakh tonnes already shipped.
By the end of September, total exports are estimated to reach around 7.75 lakh tonnes.
Mills may request the government to allow the export of the remaining 2 lakh tonnes in the new season beginning October 1.
Thanks to good monsoon rains, sugar production is expected to rise in the upcoming season, improving export prospects.
Several sugar industry bodies have urged the government to approve 2 million tonnes of sugar exports before the new season begins.
