Drought Impacts Farming in Southern Australia, Light Rain Brings Hope in Some Areas
★ Most parts of southern Australia, especially the high-rainfall zones in the South East, are experiencing severe drought conditions. ★ The region is currently in the final three weeks of its ideal sowing window.
★ In contrast, cropping conditions remain good to excellent in Queensland and northern New South Wales (NSW). Some parts of southern NSW have received enough rain to germinate dry-sown crops or revive previously germinated but struggling crops.
★ Due to extremely dry soil profiles, strong and sometimes destructive winds have halted the sowing of winter wheat and lentils in South Australia.
★ However, weather forecasts for the coming days indicate the possibility of showers. While farmers in southern Australia are grappling with harsh drought, there is still hope for rain. Meanwhile, farming conditions in Queensland and northern NSW continue to be favorable.
