Due to heavy rains, the water level in the reservoirs reached above 40 percent

New Delhi. Due to the expected heavy rainfall from the southwest monsoon, water storage in 161 major dams and reservoirs across the country has risen to over 40 percent of their total storage capacity.

According to the weekly report by the Central Water Commission, the total storage capacity of these reservoirs is 182.444 billion cubic meters (BCM), of which 78.381 BCM, or 43 percent, is currently filled.

This is a notable increase from last week’s 36 percent. Five reservoirs have reached full capacity, while two major reservoirs in South India — Krishna Raja Sagar and Mettur (Stanley) — are also nearly full.

Data from the Meteorological Department indicates that rainfall at the national level has been about 12 percent above the normal average so far, and with the monsoon still active in many states, further rain is expected.

This ongoing rainfall is likely to continue increasing water levels in the dams and reservoirs, ensuring ample water availability for irrigation, particularly during the upcoming Rabi season.

The current water storage is significantly higher — 89 percentage points more than the same period last year and 75 percentage points above the 10-year average.

It is worth noting that during the first half of June, the monsoon was sluggish, leading to a 31 percent rainfall deficit as of June 15. However, with an intense revival in the second half of June, the shortfall was quickly recovered and turned into a surplus.

According to the Water Commission, the positive aspect is that water storage has increased across all five hydrological regions of the country, indicating a more balanced distribution of rainfall.

Although the monsoon reached all states earlier than the usual schedule, many districts are still expected to receive good rainfall.

Meanwhile, heavy rainfall in Nepal has significantly raised water levels in rivers originating from there. A similar situation is being observed in rivers flowing from Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh.
