Early Monsoon and Heavy Rainfall Pose Disease Threat to Cardamom Crop
★ The early arrival of the monsoon and excessive rainfall during May and June have increased the risk of fungal diseases and clump rot in cardamom plantations.
★ While March and April received adequate rainfall, the heavy showers and strong winds in May and June have caused significant damage. As a result, new crop production may decline by 10–15%, bringing the estimated output down to around 30,000 tonnes.
★ Currently, the average market price of cardamom is Rs. 2,650 per kg. Prices are expected to rise further in July but may ease slightly in August as fresh crop arrivals increase.
★ Due to inadequate rainfall, production in Guatemala has been affected, giving India an edge in the export market. India is expected to export a substantial quantity of cardamom between August and January.
★ However, prices may remain volatile due to global uncertainties and possible higher production.
