Emphasis on the need to reduce the retail price of pulses

The issue of high retail prices for pulses, despite a drop in wholesale prices, is an important concern, particularly for consumers who are not benefiting from the price reduction. While wholesale prices of pulses like Tuvar and Gram have decreased by 15-25% over the past couple of months, retail prices have remained stagnant, leaving consumers paying higher prices than necessary.

Several factors contribute to this discrepancy in pricing:

  1. Lag in Retail Price Adjustment: The retail price hasn't yet mirrored the drop in wholesale prices because much of the existing stock was purchased at higher prices, and retailers have not fully sold these stocks yet. As a result, consumers are still paying the higher prices of the previous inventory.

  2. Impact of Imports: The duty-free imports of pulses, particularly yellow peas, have disrupted the domestic demand for Desi gram, leading to a shift in consumption patterns. This has impacted the pricing structure, especially for pulses like Tuvar, Urad, and Masur. The large-scale imports have also led to a decrease in domestic prices for these pulses, but this reduction is not yet reflected in retail prices.

  3. Market Dynamics: Tuvar and Gram are seasonal pulses, and their supply often coincides, which can cause fluctuations in the prices. Tuvar's supply peaks in February-March, while Rabi season pulses like gram also begin to enter the market around the same time. Despite a softening in wholesale prices, the retail market has not adjusted accordingly, mainly due to the continuation of old stocks.

  4. Future Price Expectations: With the duty-free import deadline for yellow peas expiring soon (February 28, 2025), and the possibility of the government extending the duty-free import period for other pulses like Urad and lentils, some improvement in pulse prices is anticipated. Retail prices may soften once these new supplies reach the market.

Ultimately, while the market conditions suggest that pulse prices may decrease soon, it is crucial for retailers to pass on the benefits of the wholesale price reduction to consumers. The government's role in regulating imports and adjusting tariffs will also play a significant role in determining future pricing trends
