In January 2025, India saw a significant import of both tur (Arhar) and lentils, highlighting continued demand despite a steady domestic supply.
Tur Import Details:
- A total of 30,372 tonnes of tur were imported.
- The major import sources were Tanzania (12,326 tonnes), Mozambique (11,706 tonnes), and Myanmar (3,990 tonnes).
- Smaller amounts came from Malawi (2,080 tonnes), Sudan (222 tonnes), and Kenya (48 tonnes).
- The bulk of the tur imports arrived at Chennai Port (16,211 tonnes) and JNPT (14,162 tonnes).
- The import of tur from Myanmar may increase as new crops become available.
Lentil Import Details:
- Total lentil imports reached 2,60,400 tonnes.
- The major suppliers were Canada (1,69,840 tonnes), Australia (73,429 tonnes), and the United States (15,428 tonnes), with smaller contributions from Russia (1,303 tonnes) and Iraq (400 tonnes).
- Kandla port was the largest entry point, receiving 120,409 tonnes, followed by Kolkata port (77,978 tonnes) and Mundra port (20,399 tonnes).
Despite the large imports, the domestic market prices for tur and lentils have stabilized. However, the ongoing imports show the importance of international sources in meeting India's consumption needs. The influx of new domestic tur and lentil crops is expected to start soon, which could impact future import trends.
