New Delhi. The ethanol blending program in India is progressing well. The level of ethanol production and blending in petrol is increasing regularly. According to informed sources, during the current ethanol supply season of 2024-25 (the first 10 months of November-October i.e. from November 2024 to August 2025),
820.52 crore liters of ethanol was supplied to the oil marketing companies (OMCs). In this, the share of ethanol produced from grains was 526.01 crore liters and the share of ethanol produced from sugarcane products was 294.51 crore liters.
The government had earlier set a target of blending 20 percent ethanol in petrol by the year 2030, but this target was achieved five years before the scheduled time i.e. in 2025 itself.
This important achievement significantly reduced the expenditure on petroleum imports and provided an opportunity to save the country's valuable foreign exchange.
Now the government has given permission to sugar millers and distillers to use unlimited quantity of sugarcane in the production of ethanol for the marketing season of 2025-26 (October-September).
This will provide great relief to the producers and will also encourage them to produce more and more ethanol. Today, the distilleries based on the government are already allowed unlimited use of raw material, while they are also being provided huge quantities of cheap rice from government stock.
The government has allowed the uncontrolled use of sugarcane juice, sugar syrup, B-heavy molasses and C-heavy molasses in ethanol production.
Now the use of corn in ethanol production has started increasing rapidly. The government is also focusing on the production of ethanol along with sugar.
