Exports of agricultural products from Myanmar have seen significant growth, surpassing $2.75 billion in the first seven months of the 2024-25 financial year (from April 1 to October 25).
According to Myanmar's Commerce Ministry, of this total, $2.30 billion came from exports via sea routes, while $446 million were exported through local border routes.
The agricultural sector is crucial to Myanmar's economy, contributing more than 30% to the country's GDP. Key agricultural exports include rice, pulses, maize, cotton, sugar, sunflower, and beans. Among these, pulses—especially urad and tuvar beans—are the second most important agricultural export after rice,
with India being the largest market for these products. Myanmar also exports a variety of other pulses and oilseeds, such as moong, gram, groundnut, soybean, and rajma.
A bilateral agreement on pulse trade exists between Myanmar and India, though India has banned the import of moong.
Despite this, Myanmar has found other markets for moong, including China and Thailand, and continues to export pulses to the European Union as well. The strong export performance in the agricultural sector has contributed to Myanmar's positive trade outlook.
