Farmers' income decreased due to not getting adequate price for cotton
The decrease in farmers' income is a result of multiple factors impacting the cotton sector this year:
Inadequate Prices: Farmers have not been receiving the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for their cotton. As prices have fallen below MSP, purchases are being made by the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) to stabilize the market. So far, CCI has bought 4.3 lakh tonnes of cotton to support the market and ensure fair prices.
Weather Conditions: Adverse weather patterns, including heavy rainfall and unexpected climate fluctuations, have significantly impacted the cotton crop in several states. This has resulted in lower productivity.
Moisture Content: In Telangana, the standing cotton crop has been affected by rain, causing an increase in moisture content. This not only reduces the quality of the cotton but also affects its market value.
Pests: The cotton crop initially faced damage from the pink caterpillar infestation, which harmed the plants and reduced yields. This pest problem was followed by the rainfall, which further compounded the challenges, making it even harder for farmers to get optimal yields.
Together, these factors have led to lower-than-expected income for farmers, who have been struggling with the dual challenge of receiving less for their crops while dealing with adverse weather and pest infestations.
