Rajkot. Although there is a lot of discussion about the damage caused to Kharif crops in Punjab and Rajasthan due to excess monsoon rains and floods in rivers, the reality is that along with this, crops have been damaged due to natural calamities in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh,
Uttarakhand, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Jharkhand and some districts of Gujarat. Some districts of Madhya Pradesh were also hit by floods earlier.
Gujarat is considered to be the most prominent producer of groundnut, cotton and castor in the region. The total production area of Kharif crops there has increased by 36 thousand hectares from 82.68 lakh hectares last seven years to 83.04 lakh hectares this time.
Under this, there has been a good increase in the sowing area of paddy, millet, groundnut and castor and the area of pigeon pea has also increased a bit, but on the other hand, there has been a decline in the area of maize, sorghum, green gram, urad, sesame, soybean, cotton and guar.
There is a possibility of damage to crops, especially pulses, oilseeds and cotton, in some districts of Gujarat due to excess rainfall, waterlogging in fields and floods in the riverine areas. Monsoon rains are still continuing there. Rain is also happening in Bihar and Jharkhand, but it is expected that paddy crops will benefit from it.
The area under paddy cultivation in Gujarat has reached 9 lakh hectares. There is mainly competition between groundnut and cotton.
This time, the sowing of groundnut in the state jumped from 19.11 lakh hectares to 22.02 lakh hectares, but the area under cotton fell from 23.63 lakh hectares to 20.81 lakh hectares. Surprisingly, the area under maize in Gujarat has also decreased by 5 thousand hectares to around 2.81 lakh hectares.
