Global rice prices remain steady amid weak demand and ample supply

Hyderabad. Global rice prices are witnessing limited fluctuations this week due to subdued demand from major importers and comfortable supply from key exporters.

India’s export offer price for 5% broken rice held steady at $388–394 per tonne, the lowest in nearly 22 months. Similarly, the price of 5% broken white rice remained stable at $378–383 per tonne.

In Vietnam, abundant stock and weak demand caused a slight dip in the price of 5% broken rice to $396 per tonne, down from $399 last week.

Thailand saw a mild price increase to $405 per tonne, up from $390, driven mainly by currency exchange fluctuations.

Exporters note that buyers are cautious and attempting to negotiate lower prices, knowing that rice supplies are strong and there is no export ban in India.

According to official data, India’s central pool rice stock as of April 1, 2025, reached a record 630.90 lakh tonnes, far exceeding the minimum buffer requirement of 136 lakh tonnes. This includes paddy stock that will be converted to rice through custom milling.

With buyers focusing on existing deals and the next Vietnamese harvest expected in June–July, rice trade is expected to remain sluggish in the short term.
