Global Supply Surge Drives Down Tur Prices in Tanzania

Dareslam. Due to ease in supply and availability at the global level and weakening of demand in importing countries, the price of pigeon pea (tuvar) has come down significantly in the African country- Tanzania.
According to the Tanzania Mercantile Exchange, the dynamics of the international market and especially the policy of duty-free import in India is playing a decisive role in the fluctuations in the prices of tur in the local market.
Since India is the largest producer and importer of tur in the world, the change in demand and price there has a huge impact on the exporting countries.
The deadline for duty-free import of tur in India has been extended till 31 March 2026, due to which it is being imported heavily from East African countries and Myanmar. Indian importers are getting the benefit of duty-free import facility.
Due to great imports, the domestic market price of tur in India has come down, so importers do not want to buy it at a higher price from any supplier country. This is affecting the demand and price of tur from Tanzania.
The CEO of the exchange says that despite the fall in prices, the Indian market remains a reliable export channel and Tanzanian farmers are getting relief from it. According to the CEO, the supply of tur is more than the demand in the global market, due to which it is natural that there will be pressure on the prices.
The Indian market remains a lifeline for the tur producers of Tanzania, but they are not getting the expected price for it.
The global market price of tur jumped to a peak of $ 1.60 per kg last year, which has now fallen to between $ 0.60 to $ 0.75 per kg. The production of tur in Tanzania is estimated to be around 4 lakh tonnes. Its domestic consumption there is low.
