New Delhi. This year, with the southwest monsoon arriving in the country about eight days ahead of schedule and bringing heavy rains across most regions, agricultural production is expected to see an improvement.
Farmers are receiving significant support in sowing various Kharif crops, resulting in a production area that is ahead of last year.
According to the Union Agriculture Secretary, the pace of cultivation of paddy, pulses, and oilseed crops is encouraging, and food grain production is expected to reach a new record.
He added that if monsoon rains continue to be normal and the weather remains favorable, not only will the Kharif crops benefit directly, but a solid foundation will also be laid for the upcoming Rabi season. Sowing for Rabi crops begins in October-November.
India is the world’s second-largest producer of rice and sugarcane. As more than half of the country's agricultural area is rain-dependent, the availability of abundant monsoon rainfall is crucial. Rainfall directly impacts crop yield, rural income, and inflation.
Above-normal rainfall will not only ensure food security for the country’s population of over 140 crore but also contribute significantly to economic growth and help stabilize the global agricultural market. Notably, India is the world’s largest exporter of rice and also exports many other agricultural commodities.
The Agriculture Secretary ruled out any fertilizer shortage during the current season and confirmed an adequate supply of urea, DAP, and potash.
While India relies on both domestic production and imports to meet its fertilizer needs, the current stock of chemical fertilizers is sufficient.
The supply and availability of seeds are being closely monitored to ensure farmers receive certified high-quality seeds in adequate quantities.
There is a strong focus on promoting the use of high-yield varieties. According to the Agriculture Secretary, if the rainfall remains favorable through September, the total agricultural output in the country could reach a new record.
