Saskatoon. The recent rains in Saskatchewan, Canada’s most prominent agricultural province, have provided partial relief from the ongoing drought conditions, allowing farmers to accelerate the sowing of various crops.
Most farmers are focusing on traditional crops, and there is no indication of any major changes in crop area distribution.
As per official data, by May 19, 2025, sowing had been completed on approximately 72 percent of the agricultural land in the province.
Pea sowing had reached 92 percent of the designated area, while lentils had been sown in 90 percent. Chickpeas were also planted in about 83 percent of the identified area, reflecting continued strong interest in pulse cultivation.
In contrast, the sowing pace for grain crops and oilseeds is somewhat slower, as the optimal sowing window remains open. Spring wheat had been sown in 80 percent of the area, barley in 71 percent, and oats in 55 percent. Full sowing for these crops is expected to be completed by mid-June.
For oilseeds, the sowing of mustard had reached 84 percent, canola 58 percent, linseed 50 percent, and soybean 31 percent.
Canada is the largest global producer and exporter of lentils and canola, and it also ranks among the leading countries in the production and export of peas and wheat.
