Government expects reduction in food inflation in the coming months

The Indian government anticipates a reduction in food inflation in the coming months, driven by strong domestic crop production and improved supply availability.

A government report highlights that the plentiful rains during the southwest monsoon have led to bumper production of Kharif crops, contributing to economic growth. However, food inflation, which has been a major concern for several months, remains high.

In October 2024, retail inflation surged to its highest level in 14 months, largely attributed to rising vegetable prices, though other food items also saw price increases.

The report notes that favorable conditions such as high water levels in dams and reservoirs, coupled with an increase in the Minimum Support Price (MSP), are expected to boost the sowing and production of Rabi crops. Additionally, early November data indicates that food prices for major commodities have started softening.

Despite this, concerns remain regarding the potential impact of geopolitical factors on domestic inflation and supply chains.

However, challenges persist, particularly due to the adverse effect of high temperatures on Rabi crop sowing, which could hinder the expected reduction in food inflation.

As a result, while the outlook for food inflation has improved slightly, a significant decline may remain challenging.
