Government procurement of paddy in Uttar Pradesh better than last year

The government procurement of paddy in Uttar Pradesh during the 2024-25 Kharif marketing season is progressing at a faster pace than last year, with farmers delivering their produce in large quantities.
So far, more than 7.30 lakh tonnes of paddy have been procured, a significant increase from 5.80 lakh tonnes during the same period in the previous year.
This has been facilitated by the establishment of 4,215 procurement centers across the state, ensuring smooth, transparent, and efficient operations.
The state has seen a favorable increase in paddy production, driven by good monsoon rains and improved weather conditions, which have resulted in higher yield rates.
To support the farmers, the central government raised the minimum support price (MSP) of paddy by 5.4%, setting it at Rs 2300 per quintal for general paddy and Rs 2320 per quintal for 'A' grade paddy in 2024-25. This move has likely encouraged farmers to sell their crops at the government procurement centers.
Within the first 48 hours of procurement, the government has already paid Rs 1464 crore to 1.05 lakh farmers. The increase in the quantity of paddy procured early in the season is considered a positive achievement, with expectations that procurement could reach a record level by the end of the marketing season.
Farmers in western Uttar Pradesh began harvesting in October, while eastern districts have started their harvest as well. The government is confident that, despite limited purchases by millers and traders, procurement will continue to increase throughout the season.
