Green Lentil Prices Firm Up in Canada Amid Expectations of Lower Production

Regina. Prices for new-crop green lentils in Western Canada's markets have strengthened slightly as buyers show interest in purchasing, driven by concerns over reduced production. The FOB farm-gate price for No. 2 grade small green lentils has improved to 25–27 cents per pound, while the price for No. 1 grade small green lentils has reached 22–23 cents per pound. However, prices for old-crop stocks remain somewhat lower due to sluggish trading activity.

As for red lentils, the price for No. 2 grade remains steady at 26 cents per pound, with trading activity also limited. Canadian producers and exporters anticipate that a weak monsoon in India—which could impact domestic pulse production—might lead to increased imports of green lentils, a crop considered a viable alternative to *tur* (pigeon pea). Canada is a major producer and exporter of green lentils, and strong demand from India could help boost its exports.

Harvesting operations for the lentil crop in Canada are currently underway but are frequently being disrupted by adverse weather conditions. The area sown with lentils has decreased this season, and average crop yields are also trending lower. Unseasonal rains are affecting grain quality, which may result in a limited supply of export-grade stock.
