Ahmedabad: In a significant move to support farmers amid rising temperatures and dry conditions, the Gujarat government has decided to release Narmada river water from May 15, a month earlier than the usual schedule of June 15.
This step is aimed at assisting farmers with zaid (summer) crops and enabling early sowing of Kharif crops like cotton.
According to officials, the early release will benefit around 13 lakh farmers in the Narmada command area, helping improve crop yields and ease water-related challenges during the early sowing season.
The government stated that there is sufficient water stock in the Narmada river to support this initiative.
With the southwest monsoon expected to arrive by mid-June, water availability for irrigation is likely to remain adequate throughout the cropping season.
Meanwhile, pre-monsoon rains in Bihar and parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh have brought a noticeable drop in temperatures, offering relief in those regions.
