Heavy Loss of Life and Property Due to Stormy Rain in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh

New Delhi. A severe storm accompanied by heavy rain caused significant damage in the national capital, Delhi, and the neighboring state of Uttar Pradesh (UP) on the evening of May 21.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that while many areas received rainfall with thunder and lightning, wind speeds reaching up to 80 km/h led to widespread destruction.

The powerful storm uprooted numerous trees and electric poles, and the roofs of several mud houses were blown away. Several casualties were reported due to trees falling on vehicles and pedestrians. Some areas also experienced infrastructure damage.

In UP, cities such as Noida, Ghaziabad, and Mirzapur bore the brunt of the storm. The mango crop, in particular, suffered considerable losses due to the strong winds.

Fortunately, the Rabi crop harvest had already been completed in most parts of Delhi and UP, so standing crops were largely unaffected. However, the wheat stock stored in mandis across UP may have sustained some damage.

The IMD has forecast normal to light rainfall in the region over the next two to three days. Agricultural experts suggest that this rainfall will improve soil moisture, which could be beneficial for the early sowing of Kharif crops.

The southwest monsoon is expected to reach Kerala by May 27. Prior to this, rainfall is predicted to continue in various regions across the country.

Rainfall has already been ongoing in the southern peninsula and parts of western India since May 19, as well as in northeastern and eastern states, helping to reduce temperatures in those areas.

However, extreme heat conditions persist in Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Haryana.
