Patan. Gujarat Agriculture Department officials have said that due to heavy rains in the northern part of the state during the current month and waterlogging in the fields, the Kharif pulse crops - Arhar (Tuvar), Moong and Urad are being badly affected and there is a possibility of more damage especially in Kutch (Bhuj) and Patan districts.

However, the government has not yet released any official data about the damage to the crop because the rain is still continuing in different parts of the state, which may cause further damage to the crop.

On the other hand, the total production area of Kharif pulses in Telangana got stuck at 2.34 lakh hectares, which was much less than the normal average area of 3.20 lakh hectares. The normal average area of Arhar (Tuvar) was estimated to be 2.71 lakh hectares,

while the actual area could reach only 1.99 lakh hectares. Similarly, compared to the five-year average area, the production area of moong decreased from 35 thousand hectares to 24 thousand hectares and the sowing area of urad decreased from 13,325 hectares to 10,125 hectares.

The vigorous harvesting and preparation of Kharif pulse crops is going to start from next month (October) and the producers have already started worrying about its prices. In some areas, the harvesting of the early new crop has already started and at present the moisture content in it is being seen to be a bit higher.

On the other hand, the international pulse market is stuck in the grip of softness and the future scenario also does not look very pleasant for the producers.

There are indications of better production of various pulses in Canada, Australia, Russia and Africa. Despite the damage to the crops due to floods and rains in India, the price of pulses in the international market remains soft, whereas India is its most important buyer country.

The arrival of new goods of pulses has already started in Canada, Russia and Africa. There is pressure on the global market price of lentils due to the possibility of increased production in Canada and Australia. Lentil production is estimated to be 24.50 lakh tonnes in Canada and 17.10 lakh tonnes in Australia. Its production is also expected to increase in Russia.
