New Delhi. Due to the continuation of extremely heavy rains of the southwest monsoon, the water level in most of the major dams and reservoirs of the country has become very high.
Due to overflowing of water, the gates of some dams and barrages have been opened, which has created the danger of flood in its flow path.
According to the latest report of the Central Water Commission, the stock of water in dams and reservoirs in three out of five divisions of the country has reached more than 90 percent of its total storage capacity.
Water stock has increased rapidly in 45 percent of the 161 major dams of the country. Monsoon rains are still continuing in many areas.
According to the report of the Water Commission, the stock of water in 161 major dams and reservoirs has increased to 158.765 billion cubic meters (BCM), which is 87 percent of its total storage capacity of 182.496 BCM.
The current water stock is 25% more than the same period last year and 15% more than the ten-year average level. Out of these 161 dams-reservoirs, 25 reservoirs have 100% water available as per their storage capacity, while 49 other dams have more than 90% water storage capacity. Sufficient water stock is also being seen in other dams.
According to the Commission's report, 10 dams in Maharashtra, 4 in Rajasthan, 2 in Madhya Pradesh and one each in Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Odisha and Karnataka have water stock equivalent to full capacity. Mizoram and Goa have one reservoir each and they are full of water.
This will help in getting more water for irrigation of various crops during the upcoming Rabi season. But the situation is not encouraging in some areas.
According to the Meteorological Department, during the current monsoon season, the eastern and northeastern states of the country have received less rainfall than the long-term average, while the northwestern, central and southern India have received more than normal rainfall. Bihar-Jharkhand has been receiving heavy rains for the last two-three days.
