New Delhi. Following the Prime Minister's suggestion, in an effort to reduce obesity, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is likely to issue an advisory for hotels and restaurants in which they may be asked to mention the amount of edible oil and sugar used in each dish.
It is worth mentioning that India is the largest consumer of both these food products in the world and both these products play an important role in increasing obesity.
According to official sources, if the amount of edible oil and sugar used in the food dish is mentioned on the display board of the hotel or restaurant, then customers will get information about it beforehand and they can be careful.
It is important to make customers aware of calorie intake. The government is concerned about the increasing problem of obesity in the country and is taking many steps to control it.
This effort is also a part of it. The government is sending a message to some food business operators (FBOs) to join this effort and implement the rule.
However, it will not be mandatory for hotels and restaurants to mention the amount of sugar and edible oil in food dishes but it will be voluntary and there will be no legal action for not following this rule.
But operators / managers will be expected to follow this rule. This will also prove how and to what extent food business operators cooperate in the government's effort to reduce obesity in the country.
If the use of sugar and edible oil in food dishes is minimized, then the problem of obesity can be controlled to a great extent.
India is the largest importer of edible oils in the world, while it is second after Brazil in the production of sugar. In India, the average annual consumption of these two food products per person has been witnessing a huge increase in the last few years.
According to a new report, by the year 2050, more than 44 crore people in India can become victims of obesity or overweight.
