Impact of Rain in Kashmir
★ Continuous rainfall in Kashmir has severely damaged paddy crops, but it has proved beneficial for saffron farmers.
★ Moisture between August and September is crucial for saffron, and this year farmers are hopeful of a good harvest.
★ Over the past two decades, changing weather patterns have badly affected saffron cultivation in Kashmir, with production falling by 65%. The cultivation area has also shrunk from 5,700 hectares to around 2,400 hectares.
★ After June’s heat and dry spell, July showers and heavy August rains revived saffron. However, paddy fields were devastated by floods and landslides, causing heavy losses to farmers.
