Impact on Markets and Farmers if the Tuvar Import Deadline is Extended for Another Year
★ Recently, the government extended the Tuvar import deadline by one more year, until March 31, 2026.
★ The country already has an abundance of imported goods, which has led to prices falling below the MSP (Minimum Support Price) in many markets during the arrival of the crop.
★ Farmers did not receive the expected prices, and some even decided to withhold their produce.
★ The government's priority is to ensure that consumers receive adequate quantities of pulses at the right prices.
★ However, there are two sides to every coin. While farmers have not received satisfactory prices, the increased imports might lead to reduced interest from farmers in planting Tuvar in the upcoming season.
★ Last year, farmers received prices up to ₹12,000 per quintal for Tuvar, but now the prices have dropped to ₹7,000 per quintal.
