Ottawa. In Canada, a leading producer and exporter of wheat, canola, lentils and peas, the preparation for harvesting of new crops has started in full swing and the new marketing season (August-July) of 2025-26 has also begun. According to the report of the government agency - Statistics Canada (Stats Can),
as compared to the end of the 2023-24 season, at the end of the 2024-25 marketing season i.e. July 2024, on 31 July 2025, the outstanding stock of barley in Canada increased from 11.50 lakh tonnes to 12.50 lakh tonnes, the stock of lentils jumped from 1.70 lakh tonnes to 5.50 lakh tonnes, the stock of peas increased from 3 lakh tonnes to 4.90 lakh tonnes and the stock of rye improved from 90 thousand tonnes to 1.40 lakh tonnes.
On the other hand, during the same period, the stock of canola in Canada fell from 32.30 lakh tonnes to 16 lakh tonnes, the stock of linseed slipped from 1.60 lakh tonnes to 1.30 lakh tonnes, the stock of oats fell from 6.70 lakh tonnes to 5.10 lakh tonnes and the stock of wheat fell from 52.80 lakh tonnes to 41.10 lakh tonnes.
Under this, the stock of durum wheat fell from 6.70 lakh tonnes to 5 lakh tonnes and the stock of other categories of wheat fell from 46.10 lakh tonnes to 36.20 lakh tonnes.
An overview and analysis of the above data shows that at the time of the start of the new marketing season in August 2025, there was a good stock of barley and rye as well as lentils and peas in Canada, while the production of pulses crops is expected to increase during the current season.
As a result, the supply and availability situation remains quite comfortable and pressure is being seen on prices. Lentil production in Australia is expected to be better while pea production in Russia is estimated to be much higher than Canada i.e. around 4.5 million tonnes. Due to this, intense competition is likely to continue in the global export market of peas and lentils.
