★ According to data from the Agriculture Ministry and various state agriculture departments, as of September 12, 2025, urad (black gram) sowing in the country has reached 23.66 lakh hectares, compared to 22.14 lakh hectares in the same period last year. This shows an increase of 1.52 lakh hectares.
State-wise situation
★ In Gujarat, urad sowing stood at 0.82 lakh hectares, 0.02 lakh hectares lower than last year.
★ In Karnataka, sowing was reported at 0.95 lakh hectares, up by 0.03 lakh hectares.
★ In Maharashtra, sowing reached 3.75 lakh hectares, down by 0.11 lakh hectares compared to last year.
★ In Rajasthan, sowing was recorded at 3.13 lakh hectares, an increase of 0.15 lakh hectares.
★ In Telangana, sowing remained unchanged at 0.10 lakh hectares.
★ In Uttar Pradesh, sowing stood at 4.63 lakh hectares, 0.06 lakh hectares higher than last year.
★ In Madhya Pradesh, sowing reached 5.95 lakh hectares, the highest increase, up by 1.71 lakh hectares compared to last year.
★ Overall, in major states, urad sowing this year has been recorded at 19.33 lakh hectares, compared to 17.51 lakh hectares last year, showing an increase of 1.82 lakh hectares.
★ However, rainfall in different regions has affected the crop, which may lead to a decline in productivity. As a result, dependence on imports could rise, with Myanmar being the only significant supplier of urad. Urad from Brazil is available but costs higher than Myanmar’s. Prices are therefore expected to remain firm.
