India – Black Matpe (Urad) Import Outlook: Mild Dip in Q1, But Annual Trend Remains Strong
★ In the April–June quarter of FY 2025–26, India’s estimated import of black matpe (urad) (HS Code: 07133110) stands at 1,96,877 metric tons. This is slightly lower by around 2,982 tons compared to the 1,99,859 metric tons imported during the same period in FY 2024–25.
So far in FY 2025–26:
★ In April 2025, urad imports reached 98,798 tons, up from 55,435.6 tons in April 2024.
★ In May 2025, imports stood at 56,362 tons, down from 77,775 tons in May 2024.
★ For June 2025, imports are estimated at 41,717 tons, compared to 66,649 tons last year.
★ Despite the increase in April, declines in May and June led to a modest 1.5% drop in total Q1 imports.
★ When compared to previous years, however, the Q1 import figures remain significantly higher:
★ In FY 2023–24, urad imports for April–June stood at 97,626 tons.
★ In FY 2022–23, the figure was 76,355 tons.
★ FY 2021–22 recorded 77,674 tons, while FY 2020–21 saw a much higher 3,44,790 tons.
★ India imported a record 8.20 lakh tons of urad in the entire FY 2024–25 — the highest ever. In comparison, FY 2025–26 has had a strong start.
★ Urad imports from Myanmar are expected to continue, as the country witnessed record production last season, and supply remains strong.
★ Given steady domestic demand and the upcoming festive season, the momentum in imports is likely to sustain. However, a sharp price rally is unlikely in the near term.
