The import of gram by India from Australia in January 2025, which reached about 2.51 lakh tonnes, is a result of record production in Australia during the 2024-25 marketing season.

Australia, as the leading global exporter of gram, has seen a significant increase in its export quantities to various countries, including India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.

In December 2024, the export of Desi gram from Australia peaked at 7,19,046 tonnes, but it saw a sharp decline of 45% in January 2025, dropping to 3,95,428 tonnes. Despite the decrease, the total export volume for January was still substantial, and India remained the largest buyer, importing around 2,50,932 tonnes.

Australia’s gram production for the current marketing season is expected to hit an all-time high of over 22 lakh tonnes, which has led to an increase in exportable stock.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) report highlighted the impressive jump in gram exports from 1,56,067 tonnes in December 2023 and January 2024 combined, to 11,14,474 tonnes in the same months of the 2024-25 season—a remarkable 880% increase.

These export trends reflect Australia's strong position in the global gram market and the growing demand for this essential pulse from countries like India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh
