India Imposes Total Ban on Imports from Pakistan Over Security Concerns

03-May-2025 12:35 PM

New Delhi. The Indian government has imposed an immediate and blanket ban on the import of all goods originating from or exported by Pakistan, citing national security and public policy concerns amid escalating bilateral tensions.

Key Points of the Ban:

  • Issued by: Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT)

  • Effective from: May 2, 2025

  • Applies to:

    • All goods of Pakistani origin

    • Goods exported directly or indirectly from Pakistan

    • Includes free imports and quantitative controlled imports

  • Legal Reference: In accordance with Para 1.02, 2.01 & 2.20A of India’s Foreign Trade Policy, 2023

  • Exceptions: Only with explicit prior approval from the Government of India

Implications:

  • Complete suspension of trade between India and Pakistan.

  • Imports via third countries (e.g., UAE, Singapore) are also banned if the origin is Pakistani.

  • May affect certain imported goods categories, particularly:

    • Dry fruits (pistachios, almonds, etc.)

    • Rock salt

    • Cement and textiles, though their share had already declined drastically after earlier restrictions.

Background:

The decision follows increased border tensions and potential security threats linked to trade channels. Officials expressed concern that Pakistani-origin goods could be used to smuggle dangerous materials or finance hostile elements.

With this, India has formally cut all trade ties with Pakistan until further notice.
