India – Sharp Decline Expected in Chickpea Imports
★ During the April–June quarter of FY 2025-26, India’s total chickpea imports are estimated at 15,896 metric tons, significantly lower than the 41,653 metric tons imported during the same period in FY 2024-25—a drop of approximately 25,757 metric tons.
★ In April 2025, India imported 14,336 metric tons of chickpeas, while imports for May and June are projected at just 1,200 and 360 metric tons, respectively.
★ By comparison, during the April–June period of FY 2024-25, total imports stood at 41,653 metric tons.
Looking at historical data:
FY 2023-24: 824 metric tons
FY 2022-23: 4,891 metric tons
FY 2021-22: 11,858 metric tons
★ The current sharp decline in imports is largely attributed to limited chickpea stock availability in Australia. The next chickpea crop in Australia is expected to arrive only by October, by which time India’s festive season demand would have already passed.
★ As a result, a strong upward trend in chickpea prices is anticipated in the coming months.
