Dumai. The Indonesian government had temporarily suspended the import of Indian peanuts in December 2025, but has now allowed imports with some stringent conditions.
According to trade analysts, even during the ban period, Indonesian importers continued to secretly or illegally import peanuts from India.
They would first transport the peanut shipments from India to Port Klang in Malaysia and then from there to Dumai in Indonesia.
Experts monitoring international trade say that at least 90 percent of peanut imports into Indonesia are happening illegally.
According to a Singaporean trader, during November 2025, more than 825 containers loaded with a huge quantity of peanuts arrived in Indonesia illegally via Dumai, while only 80 containers arrived at official ports. The route from Klang to Dumai is considered quite attractive and safe for smugglers.
According to trade analysts, there are no strict regulations governing trade between India and Malaysia. Port Klang in Malaysia is considered a transit port.
Goods are loaded onto large and small boats from there and transported to various locations. These boats can carry up to 20 containers of cargo.
Transporting peanut shipments from Port Klang to Dumai Port in Indonesia is not very difficult. Dumai port is considered a major port for smuggling in Indonesia. This route is also known for the smuggling of rice from India to Malaysia and then to Indonesia.
