India's Edible Oil Imports Drop by 2.2% from November to March
★ Edible oil imports in India from November to March declined by 2.2% compared to last year, reaching 56.4 lakh tons.
★ During the same period, palm oil imports were 24.5 lakh tons, down from 35.5 lakh tons last year.
★ On the other hand, imports of soft oils (soybean oil/sunflower oil) increased.
★ Due to high international prices of palm oil, imports of alternative oils rose.
★ Recently, the United States imposed heavy tariffs on China and a 10% import tariff on other countries, making palm oil imports more expensive in the U.S., leading to increased use of domestic oils like soybean and sunflower oil.
★ Although palm oil consumption in the U.S. is relatively low, the tariff impact will still be felt.
★ Following the announcement of the new tariffs, a downward trend has been observed in the international edible oil and oilseed markets.
