It seems that India has emerged as a competitive player in Bangladesh's recent rice import tender, offering the most attractive pricing.
The bid of $477 per ton (CIF liner out) for 50,000 tons of non-basmati Sela rice is positioned as a strong deal, factoring in all transport and unloading costs at Bangladesh's ports.
The price is competitive when compared to other offers ranging from $477.77 to $494.95 per ton, most of which are also for Indian rice.
Bangladesh's current need for rice imports stems from a significant shortfall in domestic production due to devastating floods and heavy rains, which affected the paddy crop.
Despite being the third-largest rice producer globally, with an average annual production of 40 million tonnes, Bangladesh's rice output has been adversely affected, leading to a reliance on imports to meet its demand.
India's position as the leading supplier in this tender highlights its crucial role in filling the gap in Bangladesh's rice supply.
The contract for the rice procurement is still under consideration, with shipping expected to happen within 40 days of the contract's finalization
