★ The government is considering imposing a 10% import duty on yellow peas, although a final decision has not yet been made. ★ Currently, there is no import duty on yellow peas until May 31.

★ The industry has demanded a 30% duty on yellow pea imports to raise the landed price in India. Currently, without any duty, yellow peas are being imported at less than ₹32 per kg. If a 30-40% duty is imposed, the price would rise above ₹38 per kg, which could benefit Indian farmers.
★ Chana imports are unlikely before September as sowing in countries like Australia begins around April-May. Hence, keeping imports open may be necessary for the government.
★ The import duty on yellow peas was lifted in December 2023, with a reimposition deadline of March 2024, which has since been extended multiple times.
★ In 2024-25 (April-March), India’s pulses imports reached a nine-year high of 6.7 million tonnes, with yellow peas accounting for 31% (2.04 million tonnes) — the highest since FY18.
★ Due to yellow pea imports, the pulses inflation rate dropped to -5.23% in April.
★ Maintaining duty-free or nominal-duty imports of yellow peas will be crucial to controlling inflation.
