According to Commitment of Traders (COT) data for the week ending July 15, managed money traders covered some of their short positions, reducing their net short by 29,106 contracts to 174,755 contracts. Commercials increased their net short position by 10,113 contracts, bringing the total to 40,294 contracts.
Temperatures are expected to remain above normal through the end of July, with overnight temperatures having been elevated in parts of the Eastern Corn Belt over the past few weeks. Rain is likely across most areas of the Corn Belt.
Export Sales data shows total commitments (shipped plus outstanding sales) at 69.467 million metric tons, which is 99% of the current USDA forecast, slightly below the 5-year average of 102%. Shipments so far total 59.114 million metric tons, or 85% of the USDA projection, behind the 88% five-year average.
