USDA’s monthly Crop Production report showed yield at 186.7 bushels per acre, down 2.1 bpa from August. Planted acreage was raised by 1.47 million acres to nearly a record 98.728 million, while harvested acreage was raised by 1.356 million acres. Total production was up 73 million bushels to 16.814 billion bushels.
According to the WASDE report, 2024/25 US stocks were raised by 20 million bushels to 1.325 billion bushels, compared to estimates for just a 6 million bushel increase. Despite higher production, new crop carryout was cut by 7 million bushels to 2.11 billion bushels, as export demand was raised by 100 million bushels.
Globally, USDA raised old crop production by 1.07 MMT to 284.18 MMT, with Brazil’s crop up 3 MMT. New crop global stocks were cut by 1.14 MMT to 281.4 MMT.
CFTC data showed spec funds added 8,442 new short contracts in corn futures and options as of September 9, taking their net short position to 99,929 contracts by Tuesday.
