According to the weekly crop progress report released at the end of the week, 87% of the corn crop has been planted in the U.S., which is just 2 percentage points ahead of the 5-year average. The emergence rate stands at 67%, better than the average of 60%. In this year’s first NASS rating, 68% of the crop was rated as good or excellent, compared to expectations of 73%. This equates to a Brugler500 index score of 374 (on a scale of 100–500), which is 11 points lower than last year’s initial rating.
According to export inspection data, 1.396 million metric tons (54.97 million bushels) of corn were shipped in the week ending May 22. This is a 20.69% decrease from the previous week but 23.52% higher than the same week last year. Japan was the top destination, receiving 374,460 metric tons, followed by Mexico (297,363 MT) and Colombia (199,544 MT). Since the marketing year began on September 1, a total of 46.98 million metric tons (1.85 billion bushels) have been exported, 29.15% more than the same period last year.
According to AgRural, 0.9% of Brazil’s second corn crop has been harvested in the states of Mato Grosso and Paraná, behind last year’s pace of 2%. Datagro has estimated the total crop at 132.7 million metric tons, up 1 million metric tons from the previous estimate.
