IPGA Demands 50% Import Duty on Peas
★ The India Pulses and Grains Association (IPGA) has urged the government to impose at least 50% import duty on peas, highlighting that global production of pulses is increasing. Australia has reported a good chickpea crop, while Australia, Canada, and Russia are seeing strong lentil production.
★ In African countries like Mozambique and Tanzania, pigeon pea output is expected to reach a record 1 million tons. Pea production abroad has also risen.
★ Pulse prices in India are trading below MSP. To ensure farmers receive fair prices, IPGA has demanded higher import duties on peas.
★ During the same period last year, imported peas were priced at \$400/ton, but now prices have fallen below \$300/ton. Similarly, African pigeon peas have declined from \$640/ton to around \$540/ton.
★ Heavy rains in August have damaged kharif pulse crops, with the extent of losses likely to become clearer in the coming weeks.
