Bangalore. The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has projected a record wheat production of 1227.24 lakh tonnes for the ongoing Rabi marketing season, based on satellite data.

This figure is significantly higher than the 1154.30 lakh tonnes estimated in the Union Agriculture Ministry’s second advance forecast released on March 10, 2025.

ISRO’s estimate covers data up to March 31, 2025, from eight major wheat-producing states — Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Bihar, Gujarat, and Maharashtra.

The estimate was made using Optical and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) remote sensing from satellites like EOS-04, EOS-06, and Resourcesat-2A, monitoring the Rabi season from October 2024 to March 2025.

According to ISRO, the total wheat sown area in these states was 330.80 lakh hectares, higher than the Agriculture Ministry’s estimate of 324.38 lakh hectares as of February 4, 2025. ISRO’s satellite-

based monitoring also includes crop condition, sowing dates, and weather impacts. Even with a margin for error, ISRO’s revised estimate puts production at a robust 1222.40 lakh tonnes.

Wheat is also grown in other states like Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi, and Chandigarh.
