Key Points from ISMA Conference
1. Mr. Gautam Goel, President of ISMA and Chairman of Indian Sugar Exim Corporation (ISEC)
★ On stage, Gautam Goel said that after the government approved 1 million tonnes of sugar exports, the financial condition of sugar mills has improved.
★ In the upcoming season, sugar production is expected to reach 34.9 million tonnes, which is 20% higher than the previous season, while consumption is expected to reach 28.4 million tonnes.
★ The government has stated that any quantity of ethanol can be produced in the coming season, which has brought cheer to the sugar industry.
★ Ethanol production in the upcoming season could reach 4.5–5 billion litres, which would use around 4.5 million tonnes of sugar.
★ The FRP (Fair and Remunerative Price) of sugarcane has increased by 16.5% since 2020, reaching ₹3,550 per quintal, but the MSP (Minimum Support Price) of sugar has remained unchanged.
★ Ethanol prices have also not been revised since 2023. ISMA has urged the government to increase ethanol prices.
★ Continuous hikes in FRP without changes in MSP create price imbalances.
★ The government has also now approved ethanol production from rice.
★ ISMA has demanded three key policy changes from the government:
1. Increase ethanol prices
2. Increase sugar MSP
3. Allow 2 million tonnes of sugar exports for 2025-26 and announce it in advance
