New Delhi. Due to heavy monsoon rains and severe floods in many states of the country including Punjab and Rajasthan, there are reports of heavy damage to Kharif crops, but it will take some time to assess the actual damage.
When the flood water recedes and the period of heavy rains also stops, then the real picture of the damage to the crops will be revealed. Damage has been caused to not just one or two but almost all the crops.
According to senior official sources, an inter-ministerial team is being sent to Punjab from the central level. The Prime Minister himself will be on a visit to Punjab today and will visit the flood affected areas.
According to officials, there are reports of heavy damage to various crops due to severe floods in various areas of states like Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Telangana.
But the damage in other states has been less as compared to Punjab and hence there is no possibility of a worrisome decline in the production of Kharif crops at the national level.
According to official sources, damage to crops is a reality but still the production of major crops is expected to be normal or satisfactory.
The production of some crops may decrease. In areas where the fields have remained waterlogged for a long time due to heavy rainfall, crops have been damaged.
Similarly, in flood affected areas, crops have not only been submerged but also badly buried under debris and mud. The pace of sowing of Kharif crops has also slowed down, which clearly shows that the conditions are not favorable for sowing.
The sowing season of Kharif crops has reached its final stage and it will end in the second or third week of the current month.
