Regina. Due to favourable weather and rainfall conditions in the last phase of crop development and negligible incidence of pests, diseases and natural calamities, lentil production in Canada is expected to be more than earlier estimates, due to which there is an atmosphere of softening in its market price.

Actually, during the last days of July, due to good rains in most parts of the most important producing province - Saskatchewan, the condition of the crop improved a lot.

Due to this, there are chances of increase in lentil production, but there is also a possibility of the quality of the grain being affected. In the southern part of Saskatchewan province, the preparation for harvesting of the new crop of lentil is going to start soon in many fields,

whereas there is a possibility of its quality being affected due to the recent rains. Lentil grains have started turning discoloured. There will be a delay in harvesting of the crop in the central western region of the state because the crop is still going through the progress phase there. It will take some time to mature.

Buyers are preparing to buy new lentils and are trying to know the status of its prices. However, most buyers are preferring contracts for delivery of distant months because at present the demand for lentils is not very strong in the importing countries. New crops are also about to arrive in the US.

At present, the buyers are focused only on the purchase of large and small green lentils of number 2 grade, while the purchase of red lentils is very less.

In the Canadian markets, the price of thick (large) green lentils is currently running between 33-35 cents per pound for number 2 grade or better category, while the price of small green lentils is being reported to be 26-28 cents per pound.

The price of red lentils remains almost stable at 28-29 cents per pound. The harvesting of the crop will start in the next few days.
