Lentil Prices Steady at Lower Levels in Canada on Production Hopes

Saskatoon. Lentil prices are seen to be stable to a great extent in the markets of western Canada during the current week. Despite better production, there is no special pressure of selling in the market and buyers are also gradually becoming active in the market. It is expected that lentil prices will not soften much in the coming days as it has already come down considerably.
According to the time and place of supply, the price of thick green lentils in Canada is currently around 24 cents per pound FOB form and the price of red lentils is 21-22 cents per pound.
The market for small green lentils remains calm and even at a price level below 20 cents per pound, limited demand from buyers is being seen in it. Looking at the initial report of the yield rate and the increase in the sowing area, it seems that the environment of stability or softening in prices may continue in the future as well.
One special thing that is being observed during the current season is that there is a lot of variation in the prices of different varieties and categories of lentils, which has been seen very rarely in recent years.
The reason for this is that the quality of lentil grains was greatly affected by the heavy unseasonal rains in the major producing areas during the last week of July.
Overall, the production of low quality lentils is likely to be more than last year. Producers will be forced to sell it by reducing the price. The availability of good quality goods is likely to be less, so it seems difficult for its prices to fall much.
New lentils are going to start arriving in Australia from next month and due to good crop condition there, production is expected to increase. This will increase the challenge and competition for Canadian exporters in an important market like India.
There are indications of increase in lentil production in Canada itself. A customs duty of 10 percent is imposed on the import of lentils in India and at present the domestic market price remains almost stable within a certain limit.
