Maharashtra Kharif Crop Area Reaches 145 Lakh Hectares

Mumbai. Sowing of Kharif crops in Maharashtra has gradually improved and has reached very close to last year. Due to regular heavy monsoon rains in the state,
farmers in many areas were facing difficulty in sowing crops and in some areas re-sowing was also required. Due to heavy rains in August, there is once again a possibility of damage to crops there.
According to the latest data of the State Agriculture Department, during the current year, till August 25, the total production area of Kharif crops in Gujarat reached 144.96 lakh hectares, which is 1.53 lakh hectares less than the sowing area of 146.49 lakh hectares during the same period last year.
Evaluation of crop-wise sowing shows that in Maharashtra, combined production area of paddy and coarse cereals during the current Kharif season increased from 31.86 lakh hectare to 36.26 lakh hectare as compared to last year, but area under pulses and cotton decreased.
Area under pulses decreased from 19.08 lakh hectare to 18.70 lakh hectare. Under this, although sowing area of Tuvar improved from 12.15 lakh hectare to 12.17 lakh hectare, area under moong fell from 2.35 lakh hectare to 2.09 lakh hectare and area under Urad slipped from 3.86 lakh hectare to 3.76 lakh hectare.
Among coarse grains, the production area of maize jumped from 11.21 lakh hectare to 14.46 lakh hectare as expected, but the sowing area of millet decreased from 4.03 lakh hectare to 3.25 lakh hectare and the area of sorghum fell from 1.05 lakh hectare to 86 thousand hectares.
The production area of cotton also decreased from 40.74 lakh hectare last year and got stuck at 38.44 lakh hectare this time. Sowing of Kharif crops in Maharashtra has reached its final stage, but the havoc of floods continues in some areas.
